Coil Springs on Wranglers since '97

I've never met a Jeep I didn't like, and respect the great history of the line.

Having participated in off-roading for 10 years, though, I've clearly seen the benefits of the coil springs used since 1997.

Doesn't matter whether it's locked, or geared, or monster-tired if it's not on the ground. The 4xCoils articulate and maintain ground contact better. They are more forgiving at higher speeds as well.

Leaf springs are an important part of Jeep history and demand greater driving skills, but performance is better with the spirals.

Larry's Comment: No doubt a better ride on coils Rich, but a lot of "Leaf Sprung" Jeep folks might differ with the off road performance angle. Any CJ or YJ takers out there?

Leaf springs

Coils are great on the road and say if you are gonna rally or something, and so is independent suspension, but off road slow crawling leaf springs handle the stress better.

Sometimes it's not good to try and even out the weight on the wheels because this tends to keep the tires from getting that extra grip that one tire needs to get over awkward terrain.

Uncomfortable? yes! Worse than coils? Not always, at least off road.

Leaf springs have no place on the road where traction per tire is relatively constant. (For some reason Corvette hasn't figured this out yet).
