Mahindra MM550XD

by SATEESH S MAGAL
(HYDERABAD,A.P, INDIA)

The rugged nature of the Jeep. The respect commanded on Indian roads and the ability to go carefree anywhere with the economy of a Diesel has made this Jeep a lifelong companion. The vehicle has a strong character and can be passed on to the next generations.

Larry's Comment: Thanks Sateesh for keeping us up-to-date on the East Indian Jeeps from Mahindra and Mahindra. It's too bad that these nice retro CJ style Jeeps are not legal here in the USA (too many EPA/Safety restrictions). However, with Mahindra and Mahindra entering the USA pickup truck market in the near future, maybe we'll also see some of the "Jeep" type models down the road.

Yes Larry. It is possible the United States may see some of these models. But they will have to face the new generation of Jeep Wranglers against which these may not stand a chance. The MM550's used old generation Peugeot's 2.5 Liter engines which do not meet EPA or even Indian Urban Pollution norms. I guess some of the newer CRDI engines from Mahindra may do the MM550's some good.

If I am not mistaken - Sadly the Mahindra company dropped the CJ look even from Army supplies since 2008-2009.

But the European market still gets the Mahindra Thar with a Peugeot Citroen Common Rail Diesel Motor. This may stand a chance in the USA. The suspension, chassis, steering is all old school Jeep - no new improvements here.
