The good kind of money pit? My '87 Cherokee

by Matt Mulcahey

My 1987 Cherokee is a 4.0L, automatic with 110,000 miles. It is my daily driver and weekend warrior.

It has:

  • Custom rhino liner paint job,
  • 9 in. long arm lift kit,
  • 40 inch tires,
  • new diffs,
  • ox air lockers,
  • custom front and back bumpers,
  • roof rack,
  • roll cage,
  • sub frame reinforcement kit,
  • lots and lots of KC day-lighters (lights--actually 15),
  • upgraded head lights,
  • upgraded axles...and,
  • a lot more little things

I would only recommend to someone who knows there way around a motor that this is because my Cherokee likes to break down. I have replaced the computer in it twice and need to do it again. The last owner had replaced it twice (btw a new computer costs around $300).

Larry's Comment: Sounds cool Matt. Send some photos!

Computer Failures
by: Nash

You might start troubleshooting the wiring harness to the computer for a short circuit. You should also check all of your ground straps and grounding connections for unseen corrosion behind the bolt or ground lug. Ground straps from the engine to the body and engine to the chassis are found to be so corroded, they aren't doing what they are supposed to. Several times I've found fault with bad grounds that cause electricity to feedback where it shouldn't and fry electronics quite easily. Electricity will find the path of least resistance. I've also found cases where wires rubbed together or against the body or ground until the insulation simply breaks down and causes an intermittent short. High frequency vibrations plague harnesses even when their plastic ties and cable management conduits and brackets seem to be solid. Good luck!
