My CRD is now 11 years old and has 190k miles.

If it didn't have the diesel engine, I would have never considered buying it.
Aside from 1 expensive engine repair, it has been very reliable.
The only thing that makes it special is the engine. Everything else is pure Jeep. Which means bearings, bushings, ball-joints, and u-joints are all going to wear out or break.
All Liberty CRDs are best described as a "mechanics special." That is, if you dont have the patience and skills necessary to keep it running properly you will hate it and go broke taking to a repair shop. And because its diesel engine is such a rare item, most mechanics don't know what to do with it.

Is it a girl Jeep? I have no clue and don't really care.
Is it a capable off-road vehicle? YES!
I've driven it to Moab with my "poor man's" 1 inch lift. It performed quite well although I didn't do anything crazy.

My CRD has done everything I asked it to and has never left me stranded.
And it gets 26 MPG.

Jeep Liberty CRD 2005 Automatic 4x4
by: Armien

Hi, can anyone help me out here please?

I heard a funny noise coming from my '05 Liberty CRD diesel engine whilst driving and pulled over to the side of the road, idling started to drop and tried giving it more gas, but by giving it more gas a big cloud of black smoke came out of the backside of the Jeep, and it died.

Tried starting it again but couldn't get it started only for me to swing the battery flat. Had to phone a tow truck and it is now standing at my mechanic with him pulling out his hair trying to figure out what the problem is. He got it started but now when he gives it gas it dies immediately. Can anyone please let me know if you had the same experience and if you got it right?

We did the computer testing, checked all the valves, sensors, and nothing. Computer picks up no problems.

Fuel heater/filter housing

Fuel heater plug...on the filter head...known to burn out, leak and let air into the system. Happened to mine last week. Primed and bled the system and it fired right up. Did it again every morning until I replaced the filter head and wiring.
