Not my Commander, but from fellows that own, drive, repair and sell Jeeps: Commanders are failure prone, too under-powered for the weight of the Commander...proof is the failure to sell.

...while the Jeep Cherokee through year 2000 models has high popularity, durability, and engine life. With usual care sees maybe 300 thousand miles. Regret in a big way letting my 1998 Cherokee go. Had it from NEW...AND ONLY 160,OOO MILES!

Commander vs XJ
by: Steven

I've had both a 1996 Grand Cherokee and (still have) a 2006 Commander, and whilst likely due to their age and history, have both proven costly in terms of repairs needed (just had to replace the actuator on the Commander - cost a bleedin' fortune!).

Still love them both though!

Not fond of the newer GC's or indeed, newer Jeep line, they're all a little too Chelsea Tractor (SUV'ish) for me. I like my Jeeps to look like 4x4's (box shape lines and all).

Jeep needs large, strong 4WD Cherokee panel truck

I prefer the " boxy, straight line style Jeeps, such as the Commander and the Cherokee. Non-Jeep product is the Toyota FJ troop carrier, one of the best of the competitors designs to oppose the Jeep lines.

A 2-ton cargo capable vehicle, such as the
Jeep Cherokee "troop carrier" or family type Off Road vehicle with majority of time "on hard surface roads" would be my preference. One capable of 4 mounted spare wheels and tires, 4 Jerry cans of gasoline, 4 Jerry cans of water, a driver and 3 passengers (all large persons at 300 lbs and 6 feet, 7 inches) and a cargo capacity of 2300 pounds would be very useful.
