I have always loved Jeeps...specifically the MB and CJ.


During my military training I had the privilege of driving an MB...3speed...that is all I can remember...always a fight over who would get to drive the little beast. Loved it!

I have owned two "kit" Jeeps...built here in South Africa...hot dipped galvanized chassis and Ford engines, and Ford suspensions...nice...very versatile.

They were available in std. 1600cc and 2L with diff-lock and a 3L V6 4X4...NICE BUT NOT THE REAL THING.

Recently, I spotted a CJ5 beast in the town where I live. WOW...I rushed over to spot it. It is a Mahindra THAR...basically a CJ5 4X4.

It has a Bosch/AVL 2.5L Turbo Diesel Engine and a Borg Warner 5 speed box. It gives 11.2km/L in town and 14.7km/L on the open road.

I only have road tyres for a while...but that does not stop it...it goes everywhere...leading a recent local 4x4 day trip to http://www.gwahumbe.co.za

I have already bent a gearbox cover plate and bent the side aluminum runner boards...which I have removed. Rock sliders to come soon
priced at R169 000 (say about 16000 US Dollars)...amazing!

Body is pressed from original press tools. Chassis is made of thick steel.

Man I am in love...power steering...brilliant!


Larry's Comment: I like your Thar with it's retro CJ5/CJ7 looks. Also, Gavin did you mean $16,000 USD (equivalent) for rock sliders?

Mahindra Jeeps and Trucks are not yet available in the USA...but they are slated to be gradually introduced here in the near future (starting with the pickup trucks).

Hi

I was doing a basic calculation of the price
The THAR costs R169 000 rand which equates to around $22000 USD. I wrote 16000 USD my mistake.

I also thought it is more tending towards A CJ 7 and not a CJ 5

Weekend away in the Mahindra 'THAR' (cj5)

We went away for the weekend and drove fairly long distance. (Port Edward, South Africa)

What an awesome place...highly recommended

The Crew and actors from the movie 'Blue Crush 2' were there. My wife and one daughter ended up in the movie as extras...Roxy girls!!

Oh yes...about the THAR....beautiful on the open road. Sat at 120km/hour easily and hardly used diesel...14 to 15 KM per liter...amazing.
We found some off-road obstacles and played a bit...could not resist the opportunity.

Wife declined her chair and slept most of the way home.

Great vehicle!

The Willys CJ 5 was not only one of the best looking 4x4s it went well off road too. The latest Mahindra 4x4 seems to be the same. It looks like a Willys CJ 5 and goes well off road. This is so magic especially if you consider that it's the cheapest 4x4 in South Africa.

Lift Kits for the Thar

Are there any lift kits available for the Thar? Can I plok on a CJ5/CJ7 suspension lift, or the wrangler TJ or JK lift kits on the Thar?

My New Mahindra Thar CRde

Hi Guys! I am thrilled to be part of Mahindra Thar community. I just purchased a slightly used Thar and just went for basic upgrade such as alloy wheels, 265 AT tyres, bull bar, headlight and tail lamp grills. These few simple add-ons transformed my 4x4 and the beast looks aggressive!

I am keen to go for hard top and looked into a few available here in India and they lack very appearance. Could anybody please suggest me I could import from South Africa/Italy a nice looking Hard Top? Would it be possible to go for hard top of Jeep Wrangler with modifications? Just an idea tickling my mind. I have access to used/new hard tops of Jeep Wrangler in Middle East.

Appreciate if you could guide me on how to do a 30-40mm lift on the Thar. What are the shocks I should be looking at (TJ/JK) etc. I'm totally new at this and I believe that you have done some work on the Thar yourself.

South African ZAR169000 is equivalent to US $16,000, and that's approx. what you pay for this fantastic vehicle. I drove a Mahindra Thar Jeep for almost 22 years before selling it last year (at a price higher than what I paid for it as a brand new jeep). It was tough, highly reliable, strong and real go anywhere and more importantly could accommodate modifications easily and superbly. I have been missing my Thar since I sold it off. Hope to get another one soon. I would like to add a photo of the vehicle, I m not sure of such link here.

As to sort out your problem, I know one specialized jeep body workshop in Delhi and Punjab who construct a high quality metal hardtop for jeep. It doesn't change the exterior appearance, uses the same rexine hood and is very reliable. They can also do a variety of other modifications and cosmetic changes.
