50 years and going strong! Southern Utah, November, 2009

I have a 59 CJ5, and I call my Willys "Willy".

It's mostly stock and I added Saginaw steering. The body is rough, but it kicks butt off road. I have owned it for 25 years and don't get to use it as much as I like.

I gotta make a plug here for CJ5's--weren't they the longest running body style? Or did CJ7's stick around longer?

Larry's Comment: Thanks for the great photo Lee! Man, that's a great shot of you (I'm assuming that's you) and your CJ5 with the Southern Utah backdrop.

The CJ5 had a run of 29 model years from 1955 through 1983, while the CJ7 was sold from 1976 through 1986 (11 model years).

Keep on Jeepin' Lee!

CJ5 span

Saying that the CJ5 lasted that long was kind of a disingenuous marketing ploy by AMC.

Let's see, by 1976 they had changed the frame, the front and rear axles, the suspension, the engine, the transmission, the transfer case, the wheelbase, the fenders, the hood, the body, the windshield, the steering assembly, the gas tank location, the tailights, etc, etc.

At least Willys changed the CJ3A to the CJ3B when all they did was raise the hood to fit the F-head engine. The original CJ5 lasted until 1971, and 1971 to 1976 they moved towards the '76 model.

So anything after '76 should by rights be called a CJ5B, and as some would say the B stands for Barbie.

Editor's Note: I'm not quite sure what "Anonymous" here is talking about, but it seems obvious that he/she doesn't like the post-1976 CJ5.
